OPENING: I wanted to make an entertaining movie about the monologue class that would show how much fun monologues can actually be. I was lucky enough to have 9 excellent New York actors, 7 very knowledgeable and articulate industry professionals, and the brilliant web humorist Ze Frank to help me. Here are excerpts from their experiences doing and watching monologues.
CHOOSING MATERIAL: In these samples from the Choosing Material section, actors share what is difficult and what is fun for them about finding monologues, and the industry pros reveal what they like and don’t like to see actors do during auditions. They had so much to say about it, we included an additional Choosing Material section in the bonus features of the DVD.
DIRECTING: The monologue class originally came about because I realized that so many problems that actors have with monologues come from a lack of clear, fun physical staging. Once these choices have been made – whether an actor ends up moving a liittle or a lot in a piece – actors’ nerves start to decrease, and they can actually start to enjoy doing monologues!
ACTING: This section of the DVD shows how to choose a simple action for a monologue, and how to play that action just as truthfully as if you were acting with a live partner. This answers the question: How can I act when there’s no one there? On the DVD we see each of the 9 actors perform monologues in their entirety - everything from Bogosian to Shakespeare.
AUDTIONING: We start by looking at how to confidently enter and exit the room. You’ll learn how to turn your self-evaluation after auditioning from negative and punishing to positive and productive, so you can always make the next audition even better. There is no tool that will better prepare you for the industry. We also demonstrate some audition exercises you can practice with your friends.
BONUS MATERIAL: In the 30 minutes of bonus interviews, our seven industry professionals give actors tons of additional advice on everything from clothing choice to college and graduate school auditions. Also in the bonus features: Philip Galinsky of the Manhattan Monologue Slam, and checklists and other info to download!

“I am rehearsing a new monologue, having just watched your monologue audition DVD. I have been shifting back and forth utilizing your book and having a ball! The value of your instructional materials is immeasurable.” – Suzanne Johnson, Actor and former student
“I can't tell you how impressed I was by the Monologue DVD. I was so happy with how it not only presented your technique in a clear and exciting manner but it also managed to capture your truly inspiring and optimistic outlook and approach to theatre and "the biz" in general. How I wish I had had this tool as a young actor first arriving in NYC! Priceless . – John Summerford, Actor, Director and former student
“I felt like just when I was about to ask a question it was answered. I had never thought of breaking down my monologue in so much detail. The video made me realize I was not taking full advantage of my monologue. There is so much more I can do with it than I'd ever realized. – Sara Haley, Actor
I am excited to offer the only DVD that shows a complete approach to monologues. If you, or your students, experience any kind of frustration or anxiety about monologues, I guarantee that THE MONOLOGUE AUDITION VIDEO will positively change the way you approach monologues and auditions, or your money back! – Karen Kohlhaas New York City, 2006

What actors and teachers have to say:
“What a great thing you've all made! A genuinely useful tool for actors, funny and informative. The video is genuinely progressive and it never flags. I will put the DVD on our third year's booklist for next year.” – Brian Parsons Central School for Speech and Drama, U.K.
" I love the extra features, especially the industry interviews. That advice is INVALUABLE and actors pay tons of money to go to seminars just to get the same advice.” – Jules Hartley, Actor
“Your video inspired me to perform monologues! ” – Julie Reed, Actor
“I loved the video. All my questions were addressed and answered. I will be viewing it many times so I can get the process without even having to think about it. Thanks so much for such an informative video” – Shirley Chan, Actor
“I'm not alone! The steps that you suggest for rehearsing the monologue into a full performance are wonderful. I especially like the "staging square" and think that by creating a specific playing field for myself I will feel comfortable in any space I have to audition in and I can't wait to try it.” – Lori Faiella, Actor
“I loved the interviews with industry insiders! They all were so frank and helpful about what they want to see, what works and what doesn't – Janine McGrath, Actor
