MONOLOGUE WORKSHOP CLASS DESCRIPTION
• Complete up to 4 audition-ready Monologues
• Learn an enjoyable, reliable monologue technique to take with you
• Learn a solid audition technique for all types of auditions
• 8 actors maximum per session
• Everyone works in every class
• You can enjoy monologues
DIRECT YOUR MONOLOGUES: Having focused, specific staging is the single most effective help for audition nerves. You will learn to create specific physical staging for your monologues that is fun to perform, and that always gives you something to physically DO when you audition.
ACT YOUR MONOLOGUES: Specific techniques help you act spontaneously, boldly and truthfully in the moment; you will also learn how to fully "act with no one" and how to keep your acting commitment to your monologue under the pressure of an audition.
AUDITION WITH YOUR MONOLOGUES: This part of the workshop is effective for all kinds of auditions. Throughout the workshop we address:
• How you enter the room
• How you introduce yourself and your monologue
• How you interact with the auditors
• How you leave the room: how not to 'apologize' or otherwise comment less than positively on your work; but instead, how to have a strong, confident finish to all of your auditions.
You will learn how to make your overall presentation as confident and professional as possible, The workshop culminates in an audition class where you can try out your new monologues and auditioning skills in a safe environment.
Karen's book The Monologue Audition: A Practical Guide for Actors is used as a guide to prepare for this class, and she is available by phone and e:mail before classes start for questions and advice in choosing material. The workshop has Five 3 1/2 hour classes. See below for "Frequently Asked Questions."
TUITION
Tuition for the Monologue workshop is $450. Upon acceptance a deposit of $150 holds your place, the remainder ($300) is due on the first day.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How many people are in the workshop?
There are a maximum of 8 people in each section; everyone works in every class.
How much preparation do I need to do outside of class?
It is essential that you have time to prepare outside of class on your own (a few hours a week) AND time to meet with one other class member at least once a week for approximately 1 1/2 hours (some people prefer to meet more).
How many monologues will I work on?
You can complete 4 audition-ready monologues during the workshop. The key to being able to bring 4 monologues to audition-ready level is to have enough time to prepare and to run the monologues enough between classes.
Who takes the workshop?
Actors in the workshop come from a range of experience, from those who have been auditioning regularly; actors who have just completed training and are preparing to audition; actors returning to the business; actors preparing for grad school, summer stock, agent or casting director auditions. Frequently actors who have had other training at Atlantic will take the class, but this is not a requirement.
What do I need to do for the interview?
The interview is not an audition. We will discuss your previous training and performing, your experience with monologues, and your goals. The interview is to make sure that you are serious about working on monologues now, clear about what the class will involve, and that you have time to rehearse and prepare outside of class.
Are monologues assigned?
The choice of material is completely up to you but Karen will give comments on choices if you like. For ideas on choosing material, please read the article Why You Should Have 20 Monologues on this website. Once actors are registered for class, they can contact Karen for comments on their choice of material.
How long should my monologues be?
Monologues should be 2 minutes or a little under (the length most frequently asked for at auditions). After the first monologue (2 minutes) actors are welcome to bring in shorter material if they wish.
What is the class environment?
The class environment is positive and professional. No one is harshly "critiqued." It is assumed that anyone who takes the class is serious about improving their monologue experience and will be working hard. Practical feedback is given about the progress of the monologues and ways to improve them.
What is expected of me as a student?
Each class of the workshop covers a set amount of material. The class moves quickly and it is important to be able to come to every class and to keep up with the work. Participants are expected to prepare fully, to be reliable rehearsal partners, and to be attentive to and respectful of each others' work in class.
Can I audit the class?
Because of the small size of the groups (a maximum of 8) no audits are allowed; the class is very participatory and everyone is expected to work in every class.
WORKSHOP LOCATION
Workshops will be held at the Atlantic Acting School , 76 9 th Avenue (just North of 15 th Street ) #537 unless otherwise specified.
REGISTRATION
Admission is based on an interview. You can schedule an interview via e:mail , or call 212-252-4200. You do not have to perform a monologue or otherwise audition for this interview. Upon acceptance, a deposit holds your place in the workshop; the tuition balance is due by the first day of class. Sorry, no payment plans.
CANCELLATION POLICIES
If you need to withdraw before a workshop starts, your deposit is refundable when someone takes your place; therefore it is in your interest to communicate as early as possible if you think you might need to withdraw. No refunds are available once the workshops have started. Missed classes can usually be made up in another section of the workshop. If classes have to be cancelled for any reason, they will be made up or a refund provided.
