Overdone Monologues

Below are lists of the most popular contemporary audition monologues, mostly from the 1960s and later. They’ve been compiled from my own experience, and with the input of colleagues who’ve also seen thousands of monologue auditions. The lists are updated periodically.

Most of the monologues are overdone because they're great. It's not necessarily bad to do an overdone monologue, but in most cases I don't suggest choosing one as the first thing you show someone.

Instead, find material that will help you stand out—a piece by a new, interesting playwright that fits you well, for example—then, you could follow up with something more known as a contrast piece, and have the best of both worlds.

Actors, feel free to email me with questions.

Teachers, if you see auditions for your college acting program and have overdone monologues to propose for these lists, let me know!
